ARTIST NOTES: I use familiar shapes coupled with an abstract approach and a plan to create visually uplifting works inspired by the natural beauty and patterns found in the environment. In this painting I have used touches of reflective media including real silver leaf. I have also enhanced parts of the painting with high gloss resin.

ARTIST BIO

I paint familiar shapes coupled with an abstract approach and a plan to create visually uplifting works inspired by the natural beauty, colours and patterns found in the environment.

Irene’s process

I begin with three layers of Gesso to give my work a solid base. The first layer is grey followed by two white. My next step (in many but not all artworks) is to freely cover the entire canvas with overlapping colours using a variety of paints. As I work I am thinking of balance, colour, contrast, harmony. Once I am satisfied with the overall effect, I then search for interesting colour combinations, that I keep and form into whatever shape I am working with. The rest I paint over. In many of my paintings I use touches of reflective media including real gold leaf before enhancing some of the designs with high gloss resin. Lastly I sign my artwork and apply a protective seal.

I am particularly inspired by my time spent around the coast, both on land and underwater. The combination of my studies in Art and Design, experience working as a designer, clay modellor and dive-master has all helped to influence and form my full time art practice.

My intention is to create works that evoke memories of places and time or just create an uplifting feeling. I work with a purpose of forming interesting colour combinations, complex and varied within my shapes.
